KANG, JUN YOUNG X YOU JI IN

강준영,  유지인, 두 작가는 물질을 다루고 형태를 완성해 가는 공예를 한다는 점은 같지만 서로 상반된 성향을 보인다. 첫째로 남자와 여자, 성별에서 느껴지는 차이가 그렇고, 사용하는 재료의 특성도 다르다. 이번 전시에서는 각기 다른 성향의 두 작가가 테이블을 중심으로 자신이 하고 싶은 각자의 이야기를 전개해 나간다.

The two artists, Kang Jun Young and Yoo Ji In, share the similarity in the point that they are crafting their art by dealing with materials and completing the forms, However their characters are conflicting. First of all, their differences in gender, male and female, and the materials used for their work are also different. In this exhibition, both artists each with different personalities, will present their own stories at the shared table.

색채에 생명을 입히는 숨과 결을 불어넣는 작가

이번 전시는 순수로 회귀하는 작가의 최근작인 숨과 결에 집중한 작품들로 구성되어있다. 정은주의 회화는 시원하고 대담하게 그은 수십결의 붓질로 이루어진 색채추상에 가까운 작품이다. 대담한 듯하지만 붓이 지나간 자리에 남은 부드럽고 섬세한 붓결이 정렬속의 무질서처럼 나부낀다. 각기 다른 색깔들은 서로 섞이며 번지고 스며들기를 반복하여 그 경계가 무엇인지 모호하게 된다. 정은주의 작품은 의도하지 않은 침묵을 하게 만들며 머릿속이 텅 비는 동시에 또 생각으로 가득차게된다. 회화의 순수성을 고심한 작가는 캔버스위에 추상적인 색채를 입힌다. 물감의 농담에 따라 다른색이 들어나기도 하고 비쳐지기도 하며 그 깊이와 무게를 여실히 드러낸다.  

작가는 바닥에 붓질이 남은 흔적을 ‘결’이라고 표현했다. 경이로운 선의 중첩된 붓질로 색이 퍼져 나가는 현상을 생존을 위한 가장 최소한의 움직임인 ‘숨’이라 이름 붙였다. 붓끝의 컬러가 수묵화처럼 번지며 스며드는 흔적은 ‘결과 숨의 호흡’이다. 화면을 수평으로 밀고 나간 붓질은 번지고, 스치는 선은 사라짐(부재)과 나타남(존재)를 보여주되 반복되는 색채의 번짐과 스밈은 자신의 몸짓과 흔적을 보여주는 존재와 시간의 흐름을 보여주고 있다.

미술평론가 박영택은 ‘언어와 문자를 벗어나고 특정 형태를 빠져나가면서도 여전히 그 무엇인가를 전달하고 보는 이로 하여금 공명하게 하며 강렬한 삶의 정념, 혹은 아름다운 자연에 대한 상당히 구체적인 공감을 유발시키는 인상과 색조, 울림들이다. 하나의 단어로 말하자면 모종의 떨림이 이 그림에는 있다. 그 떨림의 진폭이 넓은 여운을 거느린다.’ 라고 표현했다.

갤러리 B.의 김서현 대표는 “이번 전시는 갤러리와 작가가 함께 성장해 나가고자 하는 취지에서 색채추상 작업에 몰두하고 있는 정은주 작가와의 전시를 기획했습니다. 단순한 그림 하나가 아니라 한시간이고 두시간이고 말없이 바라보고 싶은 그런 작품을 갤러리B.의 첫번째 개인전으로 소개하고 싶었습니다. ‘Beyond the Line’은 마음속에 무언가를 담고 느끼고 생각하게 되는 그런 전시 입니다.  관람객들도 마음으로 느끼고 봐 주었으면 하는 바람으로 전시를 개최합니다.” 고 밝혔다.

정은주는 모든 작품이 사각형에서 시작하는 점을 인지하고 추상작업의 단계를 변형시켜온 작가다. 나무판을 잘라 스프레이를 분사한 테트리스 시리즈와 사각형의 도화지와 캔버스 안에서 공간을 나누고 색으로 면을 구분한 색면 시리즈, 회화로의 귀결을 네모난 캔버스위에 흐르는 색채를 통해 풀어낸 숨, 결 시리즈가 있다. 이번 전시 Beyond the Line 에서는 그녀의 회화 연구의 집결체인 숨,결 시리즈의 최신 작품들을 공개한다.

갤러리 B.는 서울 청담동에 지난 6월 28일에 오픈한 컨템포러리 아트 갤러리로 한국에 공개되지 않았던 앤디워홀부터 펑정지에, 진마이어슨 등 27여점을 소개한 ‘Unlimited’ 전시를 개최한 바 있다. 이번 개인전을 시작으로 참신하고 깊이있는 주제를 통해 더욱 다양한 국내외 작가들을 소개할 예정이다.

Jeong, Eun Ju’s painting is a bold and strong continuous series of abstracted colors, consisting of multiple layers of brush strokes. Strong but soft delicate touches are imprinted on the trace fluttering chaotically in an order. The colors mix, spread out and smudge in so the border line becomes ambiguous.

Jeong, Eun Ju describes the straining of the brush strokes as, “Lines.”  She named the phenomena of the stunning layers of colors “Breath” as it is essential for survival. The smudging and smoothness of the colors are harmonies of “Breath” and “Lines.” Horizontal strokes from one end to the other, the crossing lines connote the disappearance (absence) and occurrence (presence). The smudges and smooth colors are continuously showing her gesture and vegetation with the time flow of existence.

An urge to breathe within a canvas.
As I let go of the spray, and through a touch of a brush, finally I am able to breathe.
The canvas consists of lines and colors.
and these components all unite and become a one colored surface.

R     egardless of languages, letters, and the shapelessness, it still delivers something strong and resonates pretty concrete sympathetic impressions, color tones and echoes about the powerful sentiments of life or enchanting nature. In one word, there is a tremor in her paintings. The amplitude of the tremors array long afterglows of emotions.

Unlimited, Gallery B.'s inaugural exhibition, is composed of works that depict marvelous worlds. We planned the exhibition's scenography to minimize unfamiliarity and provide comfort. We hope that viewers will sense global artistic trends and their origins from the exhibition.

The exhibition will include works by distinguished artists that present the overall trend of the global market, including works by Feng Zheng Jie, Lee Ufan, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Andy Warhol, Julian Opie and graffiti artist Mr. Brainwash.

The exhibition will also present many works by prominent contemporary Korean artists based in Korea and abroad. Viewers will find New York-raised artist Jin Meyerson's early work, from 2009. The exhibition represents artists who work in various media, including photographer Jeonglok Lee whose work received the highest bid at the Philips Auction in London, Suejin Chung, Keunwook Ji were selected as contemporary artists to represent Korea at the Hong Kong Christie’s Auction, and Sun Choi: Jungmin Seo who garnered much attention at the Venice and steel artist Songjoon Lee.

Organized around works that focus on energies that are invisible yet present, the boundary between consciousness and unconsciousness, and moments that transform the monotony of daily life, and works that lay greater importance on the process than results, this exhibition will present the infinite potential of human emotions and senses through art.

The exhibition will be open from June 28 through August 30. It will be followed by an exhibition of attractive and powerful works by Korean and global artists whose works can be found in enormous Museums, Art Basel, Art Biennales, and the world's top auctions.

갤러리 B. 첫 번째 오프닝을 장식할 소장품전 Unlimited(언리미티드) 전시는 경이로운 세계를 구현하는 작품들로 구성된다. 관람객에게 낯섦보다는 편안함을 선사하고, 미술 문화의 트렌드와 그 근원을 느끼길 바라는 마음으로 전시 시노그래피를 구상했다.

한국에 공개되지 않았던 펑정지에, 이우환, 피카소, 샤갈, 앤디워홀의 독특한 작품은 물론 팝아티스트 줄리안 오피, 그래피티 아티스트로 유명한 Mr. 브레인워시 등 후기 인상파부터 팝아트까지 미술 시장의 다양한 흐름을 볼 수 있는 유명 작가의 작품들이 전시된다.

현재 국내외에서 활발하게 활동하고 있는 컨템포러리 아티스트의 작품도 다수 선보인다. 뉴욕 출신의 진 마이어슨(Jin Meyerson)의 2009년 초기작부터 영국 필립스 경매에서 큰 화제를 모은 사진가 이정록, 홍콩 크리스티에서 한국 컨템포러리 작가로 선정된 정수진, 지근욱, 베니스 비엔날레에서 주목 받고 있는 서정민, 종근당 예술지상 작가로 선정되어 깊이 있는 작품성으로 인정받고 있는 전현선, 김중백, 스틸아트로 유명한 이송준 작가 등 다양한 장르의 작품들을 만날 수 있다.

보이지 않지만 존재하는 에너지, 의식과 무의식의 경계, 일상의 단조로움을 특별하게 변화시키는순간, 그리고 결과물보다 제작과정을 중시한 시간을 주제로 한 작품들 위주로 큐레이팅한 이번 전시는 예술을 통해서 인간의 무한한 감정과 감각을 펼쳐 보이는 자리가 될 것이다.

이번 전시는 6월 28일부터 8월 30일까지 관람할 수 있으며, 대형 미술관, 아트바젤, 비엔날레 및 세계 3대 경매에서 볼 수 있는 국내외 작가들의 매력적이고 강렬한 작품 전시로 이어질 예정이다.
